Camp Safety at BSBC

Worry-Free Camping Starts with Safety

At Big Sky Bible Camp, the safety and well-being of every camper is a responsibility we take seriously. We work hard to minimize risk through careful planning, trained supervision, and established safety and child-protection policies.

Medical Safety & Health Care

On-site medical care

During each camp session, a licensed medical professional (typically an RN, NP, or M.D.) is responsible for overseeing camper health needs and administering medications as needed.

If a camper gets sick or injured

If a camper becomes ill, they’re evaluated by the camp health officer and cared for appropriately, including rest and monitoring when needed. If additional care is required, Big Sky coordinates with local providers and contacts parents/guardians as appropriate.

Emergency care & nearest medical facilities

Big Sky Bible Camp is within reasonable driving distance of medical facilities and emergency services in Kalispell, MT. If outside medical care is needed, parents/guardians are contacted as soon as possible, and staff remain with the camper until proper care and supervision are in place.

Weather & Environmental Safety

Summer weather and changing conditions

Outdoor camp requires flexibility. We adjust our activities based on the policies and procedures covered in staff risk-management training.

Winter weather

For winter camps, we monitor temperatures and run alternate indoor activities if it’s too cold to be outside. Cabins and buildings are heated, and the schedule allows time to change out of wet and snowy clothes and warm up.

Activity Safety

We recognize some activities involve inherent risk, so we manage risk responsibly by planning carefully, training staff, and using appropriate procedures and equipment.
Waterfront safety (swimming/boating)
  • Waterfront activities are supervised by trained staff and conducted according to established safety procedures.
  • Staff overseeing swimming/boating are trained in lifeguarding, First Aid, and CPR, and campers are supervised during waterfront activities.
  • Campers participate in a swim assessment to help determine appropriate swimming areas and activity levels.
  • Life jackets are required for boating activities.
High-challenge activities (ropes course / climbing / wilderness)
  • Expert Supervision: Ropes courses, climbing elements, and wilderness activities are supervised by trained staff following established safety procedures.
  • Mandatory Briefings: All campers receive comprehensive safety briefings before participating.
  • Protective Gear:
    • Required equipment (including harnesses and helmets) is provided and professionally fitted for each camper.
    • All gear is inspected before use.
  • Technical Setup: Ropes course equipment is exclusively set up and taken down by trained individuals.
Equipment + supervision standards
  • Pre-Activity Assessment: Leaders evaluate potential risks to determine the necessary supervision levels, procedures, and safety equipment before activities begin.
  • Active Monitoring: Staff monitor all ongoing activities to ensure safety guidelines are strictly followed.
